1. Location,
Physical Characteristics of Municipality
The Municipality of Katipunan
is situated in the northwestern side of Zamboanga del Norte. It
is approximately between the altitude 8 degrees 19 minutes north
and longitude 123 degrees 14 minutes and 123 degrees 21 minutes
east. It is bounded in the west by the municipality of Roxas, on
the south by the municipality of Sergio Osmeña, on the east by
the City of Dipolog and on the north by Sulu/Mindanao Sea. It is
about 719.0 kilometers South of Manila and 15.0 kilometers away
from the Dipolog City.
It has a total land area of 25,510
hectares more or less and divided into thirty barangays within
its political jurisdiction.
The municipality of Katipunan has
a generally rugged terrain. Its barangays are situated on the top
of hills except the lowland barangays of Barangay Uno, Barangay
Dos, Daanglungsod, New Tambo, San Antonio, Tuburan and northern
part of Dr. Jose Rizal.
2. Political
Subdivision
The municipality of
Katipunan is composed of 30 barangays. The two of these namely:
Barangay Uno and Baranagy Dos are classified as urban area, it
was located in the Poblacion proper and biggest population can be
accounted among these barangays.
These two barangays
also served as the commercial center, where numerous business
establishments can be found including the Municipal Public
Market. While the rest of the barangays are classified as rural
area.
The total land area is
divided into thirty barangays with its jurisdiction.

Topography
The municipality of
Katipunan is generally rugged. Most of its barangays is situated
on top of hills except the following area namely: Barangay Uno,
Barangay Dos, dr. Jose Rizal, San Antonio, New Tambo, and Tuburan
which are situated in a depress and lowland area of this
municipality. It was strips with two big rivers that serve as the
main drainage of water during heavy down pour of rain. These are
the Lubungan and Dicayo rivers. The shoreline stretches to about
five kilometers from the boundary of Dipolog City to the boundary
of the municipality of Pres. Manuel A. Roxas. Along this
coastline that embraces the water territory of this municipality
are natural depths that could be utilized and developed. These
are located at San Antonio and Minang near the boundary of the
municipality of Pres. Manuel A. Roxas.
4. Climate
The municipality of
Katipunan belongs to the fourth type of climate. It is mild and
moderate; it has two distinct seasons the dry and rainy. Dry
season usually starts in the month of January and ends either on
April or May. This is the second cropping and harvest season of
our farmers and this was called “PANGULILANG” where drought and
fewer rainfalls may experience. Rainy season usually starts
either on May or June and ends on the month of December. This is
the first cropping and harvest season of our farmers and this was
called “PANUIG” where abundant harvest of rice crop may
experience due to sufficient water supply.
5. Soil
Classification and Uses
As per record verified
from the Bureau of soils, the soil of the municipality of
Katipunan has been classified into five types. These are Dohinob
clay, San Manuel sandy loam, Mandawe clay, Mountain soils and
Beach sand.

LAND
CLASSIFICATION
1. General Land Use
Development in the
municipality of Katipunan is already evident, as improvements
sprouted in the Poblacion as well in the countryside. These have
been made possible through the implementation of the development
plans of 1980 – 1986.
The existing general
land uses for the purpose of this plan are classified into
built-up areas, agricultural areas, forestal areas, and
agro-industrial areas.
Built-up
Areas
Built-up areas in the
municipality have total of three hundred six hectares (306 has.)
more or less comprising only 1.20% of the total land area of the
municipality. This includes the built-up areas within the
Poblacion and the settlement clusters in the rural barangays.
Agricultural Areas
The croplands
represent 56.46% of the total land areas in the municipality or
an equivalent of 14,404.05 hectares. These areas are planted with
permanent and annual crops. These permanent crops include,
coffee, cacao and other fruit tress such as mango, lanzones,
jackfruit, etc.
Forest Areas
Approximately 41.86%
of the total land area of Katipunan is classified into
forestlands. These include the timberland areas logged-over or
non-commercial forest and the alienable and disposable lands.
These forest areas are situated in the southern section of the
municipality adjacent to the municipality of Pres. Manuel A.
Roxas and Sergio Osmeña, Sr.
Approximately 973
hectares of this forest are classified as alienable and
disposable lands. These are either kaingined or cultivated with
agricultural crops.
The settlement pockets
in the different barangays are those areas which are
strategically located near the existing service facilities,
constructed residences, dwelling and other amenities such as
school sites, market tiendas, health center and barangay halls or
multi-purpose centers.
URBAN
AREAS
Residential Area
The approximate land
area used for residential purpose in the center is 102.35
hectares, representing 33.45% of the total urban area.
Commercial Area
The area devoted to
commerce and industry is about 2.36 hectares representing 0.77%
of the urban lands. Included in this area are market building,
big private stores and other sari-sari stores sprawling near the
municipal building.
Industrial Area
This area intended
specially for industrial use is about 1.19 hectares but future
reclassification may increase its area and business
entrepreneurs/industrialist could have enough for this
industries.
Institutional Area
These are the areas
where the municipal building schools, the church and other
institutions are located. It occupies a bigger land area.
Plaza and Open Space
The plaza and other
open spaces situated in the urban centers are estimated at 1.53
hectares. People can refresh themselves on this area. The
municipal plaza is only space suitable for this
purpose.
Recreational Area
The recreational area
in the municipality is located on the eastern portion of the
municipality, approximately 0.34 hectares. Cockfighting is during
Sundays and other Holidays.
Roads
The lands devoted to
agriculture comprises about fifty six point forty six percent
56.46% of the urban lands are planted with coconuts, bananas and
lately on with mangoes while some portion are devoted to
vegetables. These lands may also have greater possibilities of
becoming a residential area in the future.
